Back in my college days, I always thought that Personal Development was a not-so-necessary course that was part of the curriculum. I thought that I knew myself well enough that I no longer needed anything to be successful in life aside from getting good grades.
The truth is, I didn’t know that my happiness centered around being in the company of my friends. When the time came we had to go our separate ways, I was left like an empty shell with no confidence or capacity to make decisions of my own. I always relied on their energy and advice.
Eventually, I bounced back and learned that the only one who can truly help me was myself. And just like how to achieve success in life, the answer to running a successful business also starts with the two words I’ve learned: Self-love.
Running a business doesn’t always go smoothly. As the saying goes “Success isn’t linear.” Setbacks will happen and they’ll make you question your own judgment. By loving yourself, you’ll be able to accept that you don’t have all the answers.
It also teaches you that it's normal to be like that, there’s no reason to beat yourself up for it, and it’s ok to ask for help.
When you know your worth and take pride in what you do, you’ll be able to set and stick to a healthy yet fair price that keeps your business afloat. Undervaluing yourself and your products will make you more susceptible to haggles which leads to bankruptcy.
Solopreneurs must have a pleasant personality to attract customers and clients. If you keep on hating yourself, you’ll be hating the world as well soon enough.
Yet, being kind to yourself will eventually bring warmth to your soul. This warmth will eventually radiate unto others and attract them to your business.
Self-doubt doesn’t just affect your decision-making as a solopreneur. It messes with your communication skills as well. Through self-love, you’ll be able to trust yourself more. Looking at a customer’s eyes is easier as you explain your product and services calmly and clearly.
This is what makes them have trust in you. And when a customer trusts you, they’ll come back again and again until they become loyal. As a bonus, they’ll invite others to visit you as well!
A lot of risk-taking is involved to make a business advance. Solopreneurs who lack self-love are paralyzed to make gambles because of fear. But, for those who are kind to themselves, the word “risk” loses its weight.
When a solopreneur is not afraid of taking risks, their mind becomes clear. They’ll be able to make smarter decisions and formulate effective backup plans in case of failure.
Self-love is like the vitamin C for the heart. It helps in making you enjoy your work by giving you more energy while preventing stress. And you know what happens to energetic and stress-free people = more work is done.
Using outside factors such as other people as your only source of love destroys you as a solopreneur. How? It makes you focus on adjusting yourself just to please and maintain your connection with them. This takes away the freedom of you thinking for your own.
You’re wasting energy, money, and time on these people when you could’ve used those resources for your business. But, if you focus on loving yourself, you’ll be making more sound decisions and getting what you really want and deserve such as pushing your business forward. Remember this, “Self-love isn’t selfishness but self-care.”
You alone have the power to bring your venture to success and to give yourself that power, you must first have peace and love within. Think of self-love as the biggest cog at the center of the machine. Without it, nothing else will work. Once you love yourself, you’ll have charisma, confidence, happiness, and eventually - a successful business.
